I hope you do realize that they said the same thing about XP. It's not against Vista per se, it's just how the gov deals with things. But a lot of departments are seriously cash-starved, and (let's face it) linux is simply better for secure/sensitive/discrete sorts of work, research efforts, large-scale work,

But Ballmer is just another corporate striver who got to the top by being a better inside player than the rest. The board should fire him now. to be that XP doesn't support a lot of software as well as win2k, although it has better hardware support. I know which problem I'd rather troubleshoot or work around.

You have the money, the power, and maybe we have a different sense of ethics you and I, but I believe that hard work, good technology and ethics can win too. But Gates doesn't blog; same for Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. [...] Many Microsoft employees do blog, reportedly more than 4000 of them.

In fact, you could create the same *partnership* with Novell if you wanted to, and BTW you wouldn't have a lot of crappy Windos legacy code to make /compatible/. Yea, brother. Oh, yeah, Steve Ballmer is really someone you can trust. This deal makes no sense for MS, especially with Vista on the doorstep.

vista is the best thing since sliced bread!
It will only encourage their software engineers to work harder and produce a better product. It certainly won't keep Windows users from upgrading to the product when it is released. You'll have to convince a lot of users fed up with windows to make them stay. Most want out of the joke that M$ made of windows.

Not sure there's a lot we can do. This is a time-honored Microsoft tradition, the puffing out of vaporware. I am hopeful people are getting a little less enthusiastic Except that AIUI Cygwin doesn't quite work in Vista. (Presumably that's being worked on.
